Exploring A Silver Birch Woodland - Composure & Photography
Exploring A Silver Birch Woodland - Composure & Photography
Welcome to a 1st person walk and talk photography tutorial! We explore a beautiful Silver birch woodland and do some Woodland Photography. I really enjoy taking the camera out for a casual walk and I have really discovered something amazing about this style of vlogging, its improved my photography. I'm not sure if it's because I am walking and talking you & myself through what I see that I am able to see more if it's that I am using a vlogging camera which has a preview screen enabling me to visualise on the go, who knows! But anything which makes photography easier, more enjoyable and efficient is always good!
Thanks for watching...

    What a beautiful area of woodland! It's funny because during your last video I saying: 'Look at those birch trees!' in the background as you were walking, so I love that you followed up with photographing some. It is certainly difficult at times to frame up and create separation in the woods, but I love the images you captured.

    Looks like a beautiful place - so many photo opportunities! In woodlands one of my main 'strategies' is to look for color separation even if most of it is green. The silver color of the birches can really help with that, or the yellow of mosses. I think I would have taken most of the shots wider and in landscape orientation, but thanks for taking us again on a nice walk 🙂

      It is, there is a lot on offer here. The contrast of colour is very interesting, some images in this video worked, others not. I'll have a look next time I compose the images and see what a wider landscape frame looks like. Thanks for watching 🌲🙏

    🙏 Dear Suzannah, some ideas: take just one step at a time. There is just The Now (Eckhart Tolle). I walk the same round just near my house twice a week. Even after 4 years I come home with different pictures. And one in 10 is good. I discover scenic places I never knew of (just 5 minute walking from home). And I bought recently a monochrome camera: that is comforting, easy, beautiful and joyful. I have no urge to share or sell the images..... its just for fun and a good reason to walk around. (Most people buy a dog, to get out).... take your time ( its already yours anyway)... oh and if your son ask attention on the moment you want to make the picture. Take a quick snapshot of what you saw. You’ ll get your time later. And it might be a good practice to fotograph quickly from instinct.

    Suzannah, are you an imposter? Absolutely not. Do not judge yourself by those that do not like what you do. Nobody pleases everyone. First of all, do you enjoy what you do? It sounds like it. And secondly, are there viewers of your "product" (images or videos) that like it? Yep. Is the "quality" of the "art" "good enough" ? Now that is the question of the ages. The beauty of the art is in the eye of the beholder. Woodland photography is really hard for me, I don't do much of it. I really like it when I see someone succeed and get great images that I am unable to see. I have done some mushroom photography, really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to how you approach it, and seeing the resulting images. You do great work. You put words to the art, and you do a great job doing so. I especially appreciate your words of inspiration and encouragement. You have a much better way with words than I.

    Suzannah, I've definitely experienced imposter syndrome in my photography and other areas of my life. I just have to accept that the people that asked me to do work for them knew what they were getting. They appeared to be satisfied with the results. Please don't be too hard on yourself. You've had lots of big life changes. I've had to learn that sometimes it's best not to push through and to take time out when you can. When I've gone out to take photos while not felt like well, I've just got poor images back and got even more disheartened.

    Photography and mindfulness - two things that were made for each other. Embrace them together. Be authentic - there's plenty of us following you for the very human way you present what you have to share with us. Higher production values might come over time, but that's nowhere near as important as being the real you.

    Hi Suzannah. Yes, in answer to your question, I do get a lot of Imposter Syndrome, sometimes I can feel that you're photography isn't very good compared to others. Especially people who've been practicing it for years! When you asked what we consider to be important, I think for me personally it's being genuine in your videos, whether or not you're struggling, creatively or otherwise. I'm struggling at the moment, health wise and that in turn is affecting my creativity. I just don't feel well enough to get out with my camera, but that can then have an impact on my mental health. It becomes a vicious circle!

    • @SuzannahMary
      @SuzannahMary 10 дней назад

      I think with social media being so much is had a part to play in that too. I'm glad to hear being yourself is what people want to see, I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your health, I can see how that can be a vicious circle and as I said I do not qualify to complain where so many people have more struggled and barriers than I do. Cheers for the support 🌲

    Imposter syndrome can be a nightmare, something I've definitely suffered from! There's a brilliant speech by Reshma Saujani the breaks down imposter syndrome and its links to gender inequality- worth a watch if you're interested! I think the most important thing is to enjoy what you're doing and do it for you anything else that comes from it it a bonus, i love watching your videos as its clear how much photography and the woodlands mean to you, it really comes through. Give me a shout if you want some ideas of places to visit around your new home, I spent a lot of time exploring those woods in my youth 😁

    New to the channel, your work is great! Imposter syndrome can affect all, but as a woman in a still largely patriarchal society, there are so.manu additional challenges in the wolrd to overcome and a lack of reference or context as to how one fits in within male dominated professions in particular. Keep your head up high, keep doing and sharing what you create and how you feel, exactly as you are... An individual! Little by little it gets better. Little by little the world gets better too.

    Suzannah, I think it’s very understandable in your situation to feel overwhelmed, lacking in creativity and experiencing imposter syndrome. You have been through two major life changes - becoming a new mother and moving house - these alone are huge upheavals not to mention continued sleepless nights. I admire your honesty and how you are just sharing your humanity. Things will change and until then just continue to do what you need to do for your mental health. That’s what's most important, not what youtube viewers want. Your genuine viewers will go on the journey with you and many new viewers will follow such a genuine, talented photographer as you. Take care of you and the little one.

    I always have Imposter Syndrome after decades of photoshoots and personal work in and out of the studio, then there are times where I feel I could teach a master class of photography especially when you get on a creative rush and everyone is saying great things about my work and/or models are contacting me to shoot more and more. It is when I occasionally step away from consistent bookings or personal work where I come back to earth so to speak. I think as creators we will always judge ourselves with high expectations. We may "try" to compare ourselves to others but subconsciously we will. A quote I discovered recently puts it all in perspective where [and I'm paraphrasing] It is the Process that is most important, Not Perfection. As long as we value the journey, That is where the real reward is. As an ex photojournalist way back when, I find the Story telling is way more valuable in photography than having that shiny perfect image of a random model or landscape. To me most of the time I look back and find remembering the Story of an image way more valuable than that perfectly lit and composed shot... but it isn't fleeting knowing that those perfect images are still somewhere in the tool bag if I need it. Another thing I have come to grips with is that eventually, especially in today's fast swipe social media attention span that My images are just like or not any better than the next guy's. It is why I have internalized what I care to shoot. As long as I'm happy with it, it is all that matters.

    • @SuzannahMary
      @SuzannahMary 11 дней назад

      You make such a valuable point that it's important to shoot for yourself and no one else. I think because I have built this channel over a number of years, there is an underlying feeling of producing high quality content, but that can be difficult when the chips are down and there's a lot of changes in your personal life. It's really interesting to hear that you have also felt imposter syndrome. I think a lot of people do. It's just not a lot of people talk about it. I think juggling multiple spinning plates is usually the trigger. Like you said when you had lots of bookings and work. It is totally the process, which is the most enjoyable part and it's important to shoot for enjoyment, not for personal value in others. I'm glad I stayed out this shoot because I actually managed to film another vlog and take lots of images which I'll share with you next week. Thanks for your kind words and your supporting comment 🙏

      @@SuzannahMary I can't imagine what stresses there are on putting out content here on you tube and having to make them worthy of lots of views, so I can understand that aspect of it. I guess it falls into a Client Based professional work where we as the audience are your client consuming what you put out. That has to be tough. I have always leaned towards channels that are not supper planned out, basically shooting what comes along, obviously with a lose plan but a casual approach to photography as an art form in the real world. I feel yours is kind of like that "idea driven but lets see what we get" feel and it as some others are more relatable in that sense I feel. Sometimes we are successful and sometimes we fail when we go out and shoot, as long as we are out practicing and exploring the photographic process... That is good news you managed to get some images that day. Looking forward to see what you got. 👍

    As many have said Suzannah I think we all suffer from it. You touched on the most important thing that it’s good for your well-being. I used to think that I wasn’t a good photographer because I wasn’t getting likes etc on instagram. I used to let it get me down but then I realised that I do photography for me. It gets me out of the house, if I get a photograph then it’s brilliant but if I don’t I don’t care as I’ve been out in nature. As for instagram I couldn’t care if anyone likes my photos, as long as I like them that’s all that matters. Your photos are great but also we are our own worst critics as well. Just continue being you 🙌🏻

      Agree with all your points, particularly the points about instagram. I’ve been on instagram just over a year and I’m beginning to think it’s just a waste of time. I only have about 2 or 3 people who I don’t personally know who actually comment or give a like to my photos, any other comments or likes are from family or friends and most of time even they don’t bother 😂😂. The reason I keep doing it is that it is nice to get a little bit of interaction and it also gives me a bit of a kick to process my photos rather than just let them sit on my hard drive until the end of time.😢

    Everyone suffers from impostor syndrome from time to time, it means you are trying better yourself, I've found a good way lessen it is to look back through your old photos rather than at other's to see how much you have improved, photography is your journey not anyone elses. You seem to have built a loyal viewership despite the recent upheavals and changes, I watch your videos because of your authenticity and genuineness as you show your successes, failures and struggles and how you feel with both your highs and lows.

    Thanks Suzannah for being honest and open.Your stories are always meaningful and I have learnt a lot from them! Don't be too hard on yourself, like you said the main goal should be enjoying nature and live in the moments that we are given. We adapt to circumstances and I'm sure there will be 'better' (whatever that means) opportunities for photography. Looking forward to future stories 😊

      @@SuzannahMary Thanks - One more thing… your story made me think more about motivation and learning. It’s healthy to aim for growth, and seeing and learning from other photographers is a great way (I surely did), but there’s a danger as well - look at all the YT video’s saying ‘Pros do this’ or ‘What beginners don’t know and the pros do’ or something like that. I feel the main goal should not be about techical skill levels and perfection; it should be about your own experiences, creation in itself, enjoying. Every step is important, every failure, every success, every so-so, every imperfection. This is why I love to follow photographers that share their journey in a very honest way, more so than the ‘pros’. Together the steps make the journey and each journey is unique (luckily!). I can also recommend to you Sean Tucker’s recent video on motivation/growth. All the best!

    Hey Suzie, don't be so hard on yourself, everyone who follows your journey loves you for your natural presentation and content. Whether it's photography, music, any creative art, has ups and downs. I think you do pretty well with a job, a baby and a RUclips channel (not to mention a sore knee lol). Take time when you need it, you're doing great but don't burn yourself out. Because that way we all lose :) Rod.

    It's good to have a rant, bet you felt a touch better one done. I always think my images are not top notch. Ones you share with us, are so beautiful. But the people around me and my mentor has encouraged me to feel better about my work, I now have book to do an exhibition in a castle, that has a gallery. That's a big step for me, in showing my work. As your a young mum, know doubt you hormones are still sorting them self out. In time you will find the right balance, for what is important to you and to survive in this world. Quilty above all for your channel, we we still be here, when ever you wish to share your journeys. Take care, your a great person and very caring to your audience. Take care.

    You don’t need any qualifications to have a You tube channel, no need for O levels, A levels or a masters degree, anybody can start one and anybody can be successful. Similarly you don’t need any qualifications to be a photographer or to call yourself a photographer, there are lots of self taught successful photographers in all categories of photography. I think the fault some small you tube channels make is assuming that the channels with lots of subscribers are automatically better photographers, that’s not necessarily true. There are a lot of small you tube photography channels where the photographers are producing some really good work but for whatever reason it doesn’t manifest in to lots of subscribers or views, it’s probably unfair but talent doesn’t always reap the rewards it deserves. Please try and stop assuming your not good enough, for the people who watch and enjoy your videos and photography, your very much good enough. Try not to compare your you tube channel to others, try not to be envious, success is different for everybody, your successes are unique to you. Suzannah I wish you every success for the future and people enjoying your videos is a success.

      I really enjoyed reading your comment, measuring your value in your work is the most important thing. The numbers aren't a reflection of your work like you said, you can so easily fall down that rabbit hole. thank you Darren, I really appreciate your well thought out comment and words of support. I look forward to snapping more in the weeks to follow :)

      @@SuzannahMary Thankyou Suzannah, I try to be positive in my comments and it’s nice to know you got a little help from it. I follow Lynne luxon-jones, i don’t know if you’ve heard of her, she specialises in mainly long exposure coastal photography. She creates some fantastic images and her videos are enjoyable, but she doesn’t get a massive number of views that her effort and talent deserves. Similarly there are some big photography channels out there whose photography is good, but not better than many smaller channels. Subscribers and views isn’t a reflection of how good someone is as a photographer, so stand tall Suzannah, hold your head high and and realise that your a good photographer and the equal of many other photographers out there.

    Before you invest in a macro lens look at a quality diopter. If you size it for your larger diameter lens then use step down rings. Playing with the focal length can make the depth of field more manageable. If you leave a restaurant early you have a reason to come back and try something different. In the same breath there are lots of different restaurants.

    • @SuzannahMary
      @SuzannahMary 12 дней назад

      Cheers John I shall have a look. Would be good to save the pennies, is it compatible with a mirrorless camera or will you need and adapter ring? Also enjoyed your restaurant description, you make a good point there!

    • @johnmclean7852
      @johnmclean7852 12 дней назад

      @@SuzannahMary the diopter screws on the lens like a filter so the camera isn’t involved with the mount. Some are cheep plastic I recommend a glass. Currently I am using the Nisi on just about any of my lenses. As a side note not all close up is macro you can have fun working at the minimum focus distance of your long lenses. Another in expensive option are extension tubes but I have had less success with them.

    Impooster syndrome has affected me, and I'm 68-years old. You'd think at my age it wouldn't matter, but I often feel like my photos aren't good enough for sharing, I fight through it as best I can. Very nice video. Bit of constructive criticism. Your bluebells look a little too purple to my eye and your greens a little yellow. The video colours look more natural to me than the photos. Adjusting your white balance and the hue and saturation on blues and yellows in post processing can correct the colours.

    If you are light painting in a more open space bring your strobe and play with the flash sink and ttl settings. A hood can be used for some high angled up lighting.
